Our regional presence in the U.S. is focused on GMP-compliant manufacturing of plasmid DNA products up to 500L. The team has extensive experience up to phase III clinical supply and successfully released more than 100 GMP batches for advanced therapy applications. 


 At our San Diego site, we are currently looking for a  ​Director, Business Development Biopharma​ to join our growing team.


Job Responsibilities

This position is responsible to support growth and grow business in the advanced therapies space. The Sr. Manager will be responsible for achieving Wacker Biotech's growth targets in North America with a focus on plasmid DNA and related manufacturing services. This role will enhance visibility of Wacker Biotech in the U.S., generate new business development leads and own the Request-for-Proposal (RFP) process.

  • Manage existing and identify new customer leads, enhance visibility of Wacker Biotech in the U.S.   Manage and report on Opportunities for new business according to the Divisional and business unit guidelines.
  • Identify business opportunities and develop value propositions for targeted customers.  Prepare internal and external proposals and leads communication and positive relationships with customers.
  • Establish a continuous market monitoring, identify trends and liaise with Operations to develop new solutions.
  • Lead the discussions and follow up with internal Operations representatives to engage and resolve technical matters.
  • Provide strategic and tactical sales and marketing support to identify new leads and participate in service contract negotiations with clients.
  • Support Project Management by assisting in the successful completion of programs by helping to meet time schedules, financial objectives and manage critical interfaces involving the customer, contracts, and communication with internal groups



  • Master’s degree in in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or a related field required, Ph.D preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of commercial business development experience at (bio)pharmaceutical organizations, preferably in the biopharmaceutical CDMO sector. 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the field of protein, plasmid DNA, vaccine production based on microbial system.
  • Ability to travel  40-50% domestic and internationally.
  • Experience in leading business development teams and negotiating service contracts.
  • Track record of successful deals in the relevant CDMO industry.
  • Related experience with project management, technology transfers, IP, CMC processes and QC activities.
  • Is able to approach new customers and values building long term customer relations.
  • Excellent verbal / written communication and technical presentation skills.
  • Enjoys working in a growing and dynamic biotech atmosphere and being part of a very international setting.
  • Has a clear hands-on and very proactive attitude (and is able to execute customer proposals him/herself, gathers competitive information, supports the BD strategy, etc.) complemented with a customer-oriented focus.
  • Ability to build strong teams and relationships across a global organization.
