At our Charleston site, we are currently looking for a(n) Process Safety Engineer to be a part of our growing team.



The Process Safety Engineer will drive Process Safety performance improvement the Charleston site. This role will report to the Sr Manager Site Process Safety. This position will interface with relevant third-parties such as agency inspectors and auditors retained by the Company as well as with department and functional leadership at the site. The position requires strong subject matter expertise regarding process safety and risk management, both as industrial disciplines as well as under the regulatory mandates for these areas. The position also requires an understanding of facility operating, engineering, maintenance, and planning processes and the ability to identify and communicate PSM and RMP ramifications of existing, new and modified processes.  


The position also requires an aptitude for "walking the plant" and explaining to site personnel, contractors, and visitors, facility processes and PSM and RMP issues and solutions related to those processes. The position requires regular interface with virtually all departments of the site.  The Process Safety Engineer will need to work both in an office and production plant environment interfacing with plant personnel including the site/department management and site safety leads as well as engineering, production, and maintenance Team Members.  This position will support, and facilitate team member and contractor involvement in and compliance with the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) processes and procedures for the site.


Job Responsibilities

  • Provide OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) subject matter expertise for the organization
    • Responsible for development, implementation, and documentation of effective site Process Safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with State and Federal requirements as well as NCA Directives
    • Authors and/or updates site Process Safety procedures to promote a strong Process Safety and EHS culture while actively engaging and influencing Team Members on Process Safety importance and benefits (e.g., the business case for Process Safety)
    • Assist the Sr Manager Site Process Safety with facilitation of PSM and RMP Compliance Audits for the site
    • Apply risk reduction strategies to mitigate and prioritize process risks associated with PHAs, DHAs, Facility Siting Assessments, Incident Investigations, and Compliance Audit findings
    • Continuously improve PSM/RMP programs and performance
    • Provide training on Process Safety relevant topics
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Technical duties
    • Facilitation and management of PHAs and DHAs (Dust Hazard Analysis) as needed for revalidations, MOCs, HPEs (High Potential Events), and WPSIs (Wacker Process Safety Incidents)
    • Facilitate Safety Instrumented System (SIS) Classification Risk Graph (Safety Requirement Specifications) completion based on PHA/DHA scenarios as requested
    • Participate in hazardous area (electrical) classification reviews and assist with completion of Explosion Protection Checklists
    • Participate in and lead Incident Investigations, especially those associated with Wacker Process Safety Incidents (WPSI) and High Potential Events (HPE)
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Administrative duties
    • Serve as the Management of Change (MOC) leader and subject matter expert
    • Administrate the SAP eMOC system and serve as the PSSR (Pre-Startup Safety Review) Scoping Tool developer/expert
    • Perform or assist with site level annual audits of Process Safety relevant programs (e.g., audits of PSSR and MOC programs, etc.)
    • Assist the Sr Manager Site Process Safety in providing site-level support for insurance audits, facility siting assessments, regulator inspections, etc.
    • Other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Environmental engineering or related field
  • 5 years’ experience in a process safety role or as an engineer working in a facility covered by OSHA’s PSM standard and/or EPA’s RMP rule

  • Ability to create training material and effectively conduct employee training
  • Ability to read and understand Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills including strong analytical, research, and report writing skills
  • Effective coaching, facilitation, presentation, team building and project management skills
  • Must be a team-based professional with demonstrated people and leadership skills
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization – from front line to site and executive leadership
  • Ability to lead and facilitate PHA and DHA as well as training other to become PHA/DHA leaders.  Experience with tools such as PHAWorks® preferred
