WACKER POLYSILICON is the global leader in the production of polycrystalline hyperpure silicon for the semiconductor and solar solar industries. At our Charleston site, we are currently looking for a Process Safety Engineer (Regional) to join our team.



The Process Safety Engineer will drive Process Safety performance improvement at all of Wacker’s Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) covered sites in the United States. This role will report to the Regional Director of Process Safety and will work in partnership and within cross-functional teams in Adrian (MI), Calvert City (KY), Charleston (TN), and Eddyville (IA) implementing a positive and effective safety culture. The Process Safety Engineer will need to work both in an office and production plant environment interfacing with plant personnel including the site managers and site safety leads as well as mechanical integrity, engineering, production, and maintenance Team Members. This position will lead, support, and facilitate team member and contractor involvement in and compliance with the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) standard and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) processes and procedures throughout the region.


Job Responsibilities

  • Provide OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) subject matter expertise for the organization.
    • Assists sites with the development, implementation, and documentation of effective Process Safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with State and Federal requirements as well as Wacker Global Directives. 
    • Authors and/or updates regional Process Safety procedures to promote a strong Process Safety and EHS culture throughout the region while actively engaging and influencing Team Members on Process Safety importance and benefits (e.g., the business case for Process Safety).
    • Assist the Regional Director of Process Safety with facilitation of PSM and RMP Compliance Audits for all covered sites in the USA. 
    • Apply risk reduction strategies to mitigate and prioritize process risks associated with PHAs, DHAs, Facility Siting Assessments, Incident Investigations, and Compliance Audit findings.
    • Continuously improve PSM/RMP programs and performance. 
    • Provide training on Process Safety relevant topics.
  • Technical Duties
    • Facilitation and management of PHAs and DHAs (Dust Hazard Analysis) as needed for revalidations, MOCs, HPEs (High Potential Events), and WPSIs (Wacker Process Safety Incidents).
    • Facilitate Safety Instrumented System (SIS) Classification Risk Graph (Safety Requirement Specifications) completion based on PHA/DHA scenarios as requested.
    • Participate in hazardous area (electrical) classification reviews and assist with completion of Explosion Protection Checklists.
    • Participate in and lead Incident Investigations, especially those associated with Wacker Process Safety Incidents (WPSI) and High Potential Events (HPE).
  • Administrative Duties
    • Serve as the Management of Change (MOC) leader and subject matter expert. 
    • Administrate the SAP eMOC system and serve as the PSSR (Pre-Startup Safety Review) Scoping Tool developer/expert.
    • Perform or assist with site level annual audits of Process Safety relevant programs (e.g., audits of PSSR and MOC programs, etc.).
    • Assist the Regional Director of Process Safety in providing regional and site-level support for insurance audits, facility siting assessments, regulator inspections, etc.



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Environmental engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience in a process safety role or as an engineer working in a facility covered by OSHA's PSM standard and/or EPA's RMP rule. 10+ years preferred.
  • Up to 20% travel may be necessary.
  • Ability to create training material and effectively conduct employee training. 
  • Ability to read and understand Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). 
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills including strong analytical, research, and report writing skills. 
  • Effective coaching, facilitation, presentation, team building and project management skills.
  • Must be a team-based professional with demonstrated people and leadership skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and projects in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization - from front line to site and executive leadership.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate PHA and DHA as well as training other to become PHA/DHA leaders.  Experience with tools such as PHAWorks(R) preferred.
  • Understanding of applicable computer systems such as MS Office (including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.) and function specific software such as PHAWorks and SAP. 
  • Broad based knowledge of RAGAGEPs (Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices). 
  • Knowledge of Reliability Centered Maintenance and Mechanical Integrity programs preferred. 
  • Experience in project management preferred. 
  • Experience in EHS program administration preferred.
