WACKER POLYSILICON is the global leader in the production of polycrystalline hyperpure silicon for the semiconductor and solar solar industries. At our Charleston site, we are currently looking for an Engineer- Mechanical, Process & Utilities to join our growing team.



The Engineer- Mechanical, Process & Utilities performs plant engineering tasks and responsibilities to maintain and continuously improve performance of multiple infrastructure facilities, mechanical systems, and equipment in support of the site's production units. The main objective of this position is to provide engineering and technical services to operations and service units in order to assure safe operations, regulatory compliance, and to maximize the availability and efficiency of these units. 

Job Requirements


  • Support and closely cooperate with the Manager responsible for the area and fellow Mechanical and Process Engineering counterparts in assuring safe operating conditions and regulatory compliance of production units.
  • Support availability of infrastructure facilities and mechanical systems and equipment at required capacity and quality. 
  • Cooperate with groups and individuals within Engineering and Maintenance departments, within Operations, and within other service units, with focus on achieving optimal results and solutions from a corporate enterprise perspective. 
  • Participate in commissioning of new and modified systems. 
  • Participate in planning and execution of system or unit turnarounds. 
  • Drive and support continuous improvement activities related to safety, quality, efficiency and cost. 
  • Conduct and coordinate debottlenecking and troubleshooting activities.
  • Coordinate and manage the activities of the Management of Change (MOC) process. 
  • Consult and support capital projects executed by project engineering. 
  • Support maintenance team in planning and execution of ITPM and MRO activities. 
  • Maintain asset data in enterprise asset management and plant engineering systems. 
  • Support procedure, process, and technology transfer and exchange between WACKER production sites.
  • Supervise third party providers for engineering and maintenance services. 
  • All other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor's Degree, or higher in a chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. 
  • 3+ years in chemical and/or oil/gas industries (or similar industrial experience)
  • 5+ years of combined professional experience in the field of plant engineering and maintenance preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering including relevant regulations, standards, and codes such as ASME, API, NFPA, ANSI, etc. 
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles and construction practices. 
  • Understanding of function and design of process and mechanical equipment and systems (pumps, heat exchangers, piping, HVAC, fire protection, cranes and hoists, elevators, etc.)    
  • Good understanding of mechanical and physical processes. 
  • Knowledge about common materials of construction used in respective systems. 
  • Knowledge of corrosion protection and material selection.
  • Basic knowledge of project economics and alternative selection.
  • Commissioning of new systems or shutdown and start-up of existing systems. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.  
  • Capability to professionally deal with changing priorities and requirements.  
  • Strong multitasking competency.  
  • Leadership skills combined with team player attitude.   
  • Preferred, but not required: SAP EAM, Functional Safety, Comos.


Work Environment and Travel

  • Plant Engineering activities are performed mainly in an office environment but also require presence in the field (manufacturing plant and/or construction site).
  • Ability to walk out to the production building multiple times each day if needed.
  • Ability to climb 10 flights of stairs.
  • Candidate must pass a pulmonary function test to be capable of wearing an air purifying respirator, if required.
  • Location for this position is the Wacker Polysilicon site in Charleston, TN. However, business travel to Wacker's sites in Germany and/or to other Wacker US sites may be required if deemed necessary to become familiar with project specifics, Wacker tools and processes and to integrate with the Wacker team.  Business travel may also be required to meet with vendors and suppliers as needed.
  • Due to schedule and milestone requirements nonstandard work schedule such as nights, holidays and/or weekends may be required.
