To strengthen our team in Charleston,
we are looking for you as a(n) Chemical Operator (CSS) - Central Services.

 

The Chemical Operator (CSS) will perform manual tasks related to the monitoring, repair, and troubleshooting of above and below grade utility distribution networks and associated equipment to ensure continuous operation. In addition, they will respond to a wide range of mechanical problems and troubleshoot for isolation and or repair, document problems encountered and communicate these through appropriate systems. The incumbent will also serve as a point contact upon requests for utility services to be started / stopped for individual consumers. Equipment operation of loaders, excavators, etc. is also required. This position will cooperate with other qualified staff in servicing, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance. This position may require work with hazardous materials and will be expected to follow company policies regarding health and environmental protection, safety, and quality. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Evaluate SWP Requests, log those requests in sitewide tracking system, verify any location or activity conflicts with other ongoing work scopes, draft permits, determine supplementary permit applicability, execute LOTO and/or EIP, authorize and monitor work performance, verify completion prior to permit closure. (Central Services supports all general site permits, all CSA permits, all crane permits, and buildings/systems owned/managed by CS department/Cost Center).
  • Inspect above and below grade utility systems (water distribution and collection networks, structures, instruments, and related equipment), Pipe Rack Structure and Network Piping systems. Frequency and documentation requirements vary by systems, ranging from weekly, monthly, quarterly.
  • Perform Excavation for inspection and repair of underground systems (water, conduits, grounding, new structures, remediation, etc.) Such requires the capability to safely operate specialized equipment such as excavator's loaders, jack hammers, rollers, dump trucks, etc.)
  • Assist in survey and layout activities using survey equipment, CAD Civil 3D model data to locate underground infrastructure prior to self-performing or permitting the performance of others in excavation activities.
  • Routinely enter and perform inspection and/or maintenance work within confined spaces site wide.
  • Serve as back-up for the site's equipment cleaning and OGF operations.
  • This position also requires training and familiarity with Infrastructure Operations functions, personnel in this role are required to train and demonstrate knowledge of the Utility generation and Waste Treating systems. They maintain compliance with Infra Operations POD's.
  • Support technical and non-technical requests for service generated through SAP notification. This represents a wide variety and varied frequency of requests ranging from general site repairs, safety hazard elimination, barricading, materials movement, HVAC ITPM's, lighting inspection/repair, internal building plumbing repairs, loading/unloading materials, rigging and heavy weight logistics support, etc., etc.
  • Serve in a mentor fashion to technical operators within the CS Group for which includes onboarding, training walks, knowledge transfer, test prep, and skills building through co-execution of work tasks.
  • Utilize SAP and other business software to enter, update and process notifications as well as source materials required for repair activities.
  • Accurately interpret standards, code, procedures, GA drawings, schematics, PI&D's load charts, survey plans/profiles and communicate this information to others or apply the information to safely execute work.
  • Serve in a lead capacity on projects and commissioning activities. Responsibilities range from provided technical direction or clarification, interpreting, and ensuring internal and external guidelines are followed, leading a team in a commissioning or return to service activity or developing purge plans.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills are required and include prompt, consistent and orderly work habits.
  • Respond to emergency situations requiring media isolation or re-route in multiple locations.
  • Assist Contractor Management through in field assessment, daily time keeping, monitoring and oversight of 3rd party contractors relative to scope on an as needed basis.
  • Complete training and demonstrate an ability to perform equipment inspection and operational checks on utility equipment.
  • Cooperate with the other qualified staff in scheduling and coordinating service requests and repair work.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.

 

Knowledge and Skills Required:

 

  • Safety 1st focus and environmentally conscious• Excellent communication skills and a team player attitude.
  • Ensure environmentally compatible disposal and recycling of waste.
  • Observe/differentiate between standard conditions and deviations from normal (e.g., unusual sounds, smells, etc.).
  • Follow company policies regarding health and environmental protection, work safety, plant safety, and quality.
  • Have a desire to lead and coach others (preferred candidates will have prior supervisory experience).
  • Ability to work any shift (including 12-hour shifts and/or rotating shifts) and overtime including weekends and holidays.
  • Experience working with hazardous materials/chemicals.
  • Demonstrable technical and mechanical knowledge (preferred candidate will have prior operations/maintenance or skilled trades experience in a chemical or heavy manufacturing environment).
  • Demonstrable knowledge in the use of tools, rigging, equipment used in Mechanical/Civil disciplines.
  • Prior excavation equipment operation experience and general knowledge of surveying, grade, offset marking, layout, etc.
  • Familiarity and or certification for plastic pipe installation, welding, fusion.
  • Experience with AWWA standards.
  • Experience with boilers and their associated steam delivery systems along with the automation controls that drive them.
  • Knowledge of air compressors, air dryers, water filtration units, waste treating and the ability to perform operation/maintenance from written procedures or as directed by technical staff.
  • Intermediate PC skills along with experience in common applications associated with interoffice communication, design, surveying, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret information from written procedures or physical presentations and subsequently demonstrate understanding and communicate to others.


Required Years of Experience:

 

  • Minimum 5 years chemical operator, technician, or similar role in a heavy manufacturing, chemical, or civil construction environment.
  • Minimum 5 years of process Maintenance, Heavy Equipment, Piping Certs. from a reputable Craft Association or similar institution.


Preferred Years of Experience:

 

  • 7+ years operator, technician, or similar role in a heavy manufacturing, chemical, or civil construction environment.


Required Education (Including Certifications, etc.):

 

  • Minimum of High School diploma or GED.


Preferred Education (Including Preferred Fields of Study, Certifications, etc.):

 

  • Chemical or Industrial Process Technology Certificate.
  • Associate's degree in a technical, Engineering, Construction Management, or verifiable related Craft Designation.


Work Environment:

 

  • Exposure to occasionally loud noise levels.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, mechanical equipment, and vibration.
  • This position will be required to work at multiple locations across the site.
  • Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (hearing protection, dust masks, respirators, gloves, Chem Suits).
  • Work on structures and platforms in excess of 150'
  • Confined Space entry is required.
  • PPE includes but not limited to: shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, vests, hardhats, safety goggles, full face respirator and other items associated with a Chemical Facility


Physical Demands:

 

  • Able to differentiate colors.
  • Exposure to outdoor / inclement weather (first break work/walkaround)
  • Bend, crawl, crouch, lift up to 50 lbs., reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, climb up to 50 m. (164 feet).
  • Potential exposure to chemicals; able to work, i.e., climb or operate valves, in full protective gear for the first breaks, maintenance, sampling, etc.
  • Wear air purifying respirator and wear necessary hearing protection.
