The Chemical Operator will work a particular shift using computers and process control systems as part of the distributed control system (DCS) to safely monitor, control, and document production at the Charleston plant site. 

In addition, they will perform inspection rounds to check safety status, environmental aspects, and to do the entire manual tasks necessary for steady and safe operations.  This position will cooperate with other qualified staff in serving, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance at the plant.

The Chemical Operator may be working with hazardous materials and will be expected to follow company policies regarding health and environmental protection, work safety, plant safety, and quality.


• Perform production duties with an emphasis on safety
• Report production performance to supervisor and provide feedback to technical staff
• Monitor and interpret DCS screens, which have diverse processes running simultaneously
• Ability to monitor and prioritize responses to issues in multiple places
• Respond to alarms wearing full protective gear
• Interact with databases and computer software; document all operational steps in an electronic log book; input downtime information into downtime tracking system
• Observe/differentiate between standard conditions and deviations from normal (e.g. unusual sounds, smells, trends in DCS, etc.)
• Work with hand tools - change filters, gaskets, valves, switch spectacle blinds, etc.
• Perform other minor maintenance tasks and repairs
• Support maintenance crew
• Read and understand P&ID's
• Perform regular production duties which include; monitoring, controlling, and documenting production flow and processing steps
• Use computers and process control systems for machine and plant control data retrieval and processing, as well as for documentation purposes, for obtaining information and for logistical and organizational purposes
• Ensure environmentally compatible disposal and recycling of waste
• Frequently communicate between control rooms, field operations, and other departments
• Contact appropriate personnel when additional expertise is required
• Identify opportunities to improve throughput and uptime
• Follow company policies regarding health and environmental protection, work safety, plant safety, quality etc.
• Assist with commissioning activities and documentation as necessary
• Other duties as assigned




  • Associates degree in a technical or mathematical field OR,
  • High School Diploma or GED AND 5+ years of chemical operator experience dealing   with hazardous chemicals such as HCI
  • Associates degree in a technical or mathematical field OR
    5+ Chemical operator experience dealing with hazardous chemicals such as HCI
  • Distillation unit operations experience preferred
  • Have proven technical and mechanical aptitude and basic computer skills
  • Be a team player with the desire to lead and coach/train others
  • Detail and quality oriented with safety and environmental consciousness required 
  • Ability for effective communication under pressure (face-to-face, radio/phone, computer)
  • Be willing to work any shift (including 12-hour shifts and /or rotating shifts) necessary to support a 24/7 operation
  • Be willing to work overtime (including weekends and holidays) if necessary
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must pass pre-employment testing
  • List Preferred Degree & Field (i.e., master’s in chemistry)
  • Completion of the Chemical Operator program at Chattanooga State Community College (or equivalent program) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher


•    Occasional exposure to loud noise levels
•    Occasional exposure to heights and overhead work requiring ladders or aerial lifts
•    Required to work 12 hour rotating shifts (including nights, weekends, holidays, etc...)
•    Must be able to be frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, mechanical equipment and vibration
•    This position will be required to work at multiple work stations
•    Protective equipment must be worn while performing some duties
•    Standard PPE includes: Shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, escape respirator
•    Additional PPE includes: Safety goggles, acid suits, rubber boots, full face respirator, etc.
•    Overtime may be required

•    Able to read DCS screens
•    Specific vision requirements include: ability to see/differentiate colors, ability to evaluate depth perception
•    Exposure to outdoor / inclement weather (heat/cold/rain)
•    No debilitating fear of wasps, spiders, heights, etc.
•    Most dept. equipment is located outside (first line breaks/inspection rounds)
•    Bend, crawl, crouch, lift up to 50 lbs., reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and climb 
•    Carry equipment up/down/through 7 stories tall building - no elevator 
•    Potential exposure to chemicals; able to work, i.e. climb or operate valves, in full protective gear for the first breaks, maintenance, sampling etc.
