At our Ann Arbor site, we are currently looking for a ​Controller - Business Unit​ to be a part of our growing team.



The Business Unit (BU) Controller is the financial lead for half of the NCA Silicones business.  The role reports to the Divisional Controller and directly supports two Business Teams - Hybrids & Sealants & Performance Solutions - in achieving strategic, operational, commercial, & financial goals.


The incumbent provides financial guidance & consultation from a functional perspective to three (3) BU Directors & their teams, creating unique complexities that require an ability to pivot successfully to address multiple needs.  Collaboration with global colleagues (two separate Global BU Controllers) is essential to ensure alignment within the business from an operational and strategic standpoint.  The role also indirectly supports the Division VP & manages the annual cost center planning activities for Charleston HDK production.


The Controller is responsible for the timely analysis & reporting of financial results to facilitate the understanding of the profitability drivers and performance vs. expectations, including managing the planning process.  They will ensure investment projects are appropriately analyzed / reviewed such that informed investment decisions are made.  The role manages the variable incentive compensation program and works closely with SMEs to develop, propose, & critique annual targets, collect, analyze, and communicate monthly actual results.


The position is also responsible for ensuring a strong internal control environment & compliance with corporate policies and procedures.


Job Responsibilities


  • Provide business advice and counsel to three Business Team Directors and their teams through active participation, acting as the business interface with other financial disciplines and actively participating in the development of business operating strategies.  This includes working with Site Directors, Supply Chain and Procurement Logistics personnel in mostly Adrian, MI and Charleston, TN locations to drive programs aimed at productivity, profit improvement or other strategic initiatives.
  • Deliver timely and accurate operational analyses as required by BU, Divisional, Regional or Corporate management.  Analyze and report on key variances to targets, forecast and prior year.
  • Support / prepare presentations for all levels of management on business performance.  Deliver presentations on business results in various settings, including monthly operational meetings.
  • Manage several NCA Regional Corporate activities for Sr. Director, Controlling, including extracting / publishing consolidated divisional results, in-transit inventory calculation / reporting, manual reposts, functional area reconciliation, duty reporting and several audit and quarterly legal entity reporting schedules
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts within the organization by initiating and/or participating in projects that reduce costs or improve efficiency.
  • Support planning process (includes cost center planning within the legal entity) for three BT Directors, all Charleston HDK(R) Production cost center owners and several freight / miscellaneous cost centers thru oversight of process and management of timeline to ensure alignment with global expectation.
  • Provide financial evaluations of capital expenditures, ensuring analyses and approval documents are prepared in accordance with regional and corporate standards. Provide independent view of merits of individual projects from a broader strategic perspective.  Manage variable incentive compensation program for all Silicones production sites and works closely with SMEs to develop, propose, and critique annual targets, collect, analyze, and communicate monthly actual results.
  •  Other responsibilities: oversight of physical inventory for North Canton, OH site, scrap analysis, reporting and resolution facilitation, back-up for transfer pricing development and counsel, ad hoc analysis, team meetings, special projects, and travel, as requested.


Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting an MBA is preferred; CMA would also be helpful
  • Minimum of 7 years directly applicable financial analysis (FP&A), cost accounting or commercial finance / pricing experience in the chemical industry or with a mid to large-size manufacturing business
  • Proven planning, budgeting, forecasting, analytical and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to be the primary finance partner for Business Director(s) and help define business strategy
  • Ability to work across all functions / levels of the organization, applying influence skills to ensure proper controls, support change initiatives / identify and communicate improvements and drive business results
  • Excellent organizational skills - able to multi-task and manage competing priorities
  • In-depth knowledge of product / standard costing terminology / processes, inventory flow of materials on production floor, discounted cash flow, IRR and ROI calculations, operational analysis (cost reduction) techniques, financial modeling / forecasting, P&L and balance sheet statements, cost center reporting, and customer pricing / commercial concepts
  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of accounting and internal managerial reporting concepts
  • Extensive experience leading complex projects and processes like budgeting and forecasting
  • Versatile and effective communication skills, encompassing verbal, written and presentation methods
  • Ability to dig into and understand the details while also thinking about the larger, strategic picture
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, SAP ERP, Business Warehouse, front-end reporting applications), including use of PIVOT tables and advance Excel formulas
  • Team player with outgoing / positive personality who can work effectively with others / as a team
