At our site in Ann Arbor, we are currently looking for a ​Compensation Manager​ to join our growing team.



As a critical member of the HR team, the Compensation Manager will develop and implement compensation policies and procedures designed to attract and retain top talent.  This position will collaborate with the Payroll team and HR business partners, as well as external resources for legal compliance and competitive information.


Job Responsibilities

  • Ensures consistency of organizational structure by developing and updating job descriptions with managers, conducting job evaluations, job grading and mapping jobs relative to others within the organization. Creates job titles and naming conventions to clearly communicate job level and subject matter expertise.  Advises and provides guidance to managers and HR business partners to promote a culture of fairness and equity.
  • Develops and updates job grades and the compensation structure including salary ranges. Benchmarks wages and salaries against market data to assess competitiveness and make recommendations.  Assists HR business partners in developing and administering hourly wage scales. Ensures fair and consistent application of wage and salary structures.
  • Develops efficient and effective processes and documentation for promotions, transfers, and other job and compensation changes.  Evaluates internal equity and makes medium-term recommendations to improve talent attraction and retention.
  • Continuously improves processes and tools/systems to conduct salary merit reviews, taking into consideration performance, experience, and internal equity.
  • Develops and maintains various incentive/bonus plans.  Benchmarks incentive plans and makes recommendations to align them with organizational goals and competitive trends. Assists Payroll Supervisor with incentive calculations and improving processes and tools/systems.
  • Uses spreadsheet and data analysis techniques to assess results and market trends.  Researches compensation practices in similar industries; based on findings, recommends changes or updates to the company's existing benefits or policies.
  • Participates in design and implements HRIS for region, particularly compensation-related modules.  Becomes subject matter expert in variety of systems used by HR, such as ADP, Success Factors, SharePoint and SAP. Identifies process improvements and tools within systems to support HR operations.
  • Uses prior experience and understanding of best practices and applicable laws to closely monitor process and determine more efficient processes and programs. Ensures fair and equitable application of processes and structure.
  • Consults with Sr Director HR Shared Services and Legal on complex issues.


Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field
  • SHRM PHR certification a plus
  • Minimum of 5 years of compensation administration experience is required.  Strongly prefer experience designing compensation programs in a multi-state environment.
  • Previous experience with Hay Job Evaluation methodology preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.  Attention to detail is critical.
  • Demonstrated process orientation and attention to detail with the ability to accurately and efficiently enter and audit data.
  • Excellent math and analytical skills required with ability to evaluate and make decisions based on facts and trends.
  • Independent worker and must be able to regularly exercise discretion, handle conflict and be firm when required.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of protected and sensitive data
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; expert Excel skills required
  • Prior experience with robust Payroll or HRIS required
