WACKER POLYMERS is the global technology leader in the development and production of redispersible powders, dispersions solid resins, powder binders and surface coating resins. At our Allentown site, we are currently looking for a Senior Chemist to join our growing team.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop new products and technologies that enable both growth as well as strengthen/defend the existing business position. Leverage core technology to develop offerings that provide long term performance and/or economic advantage in the marketplace.
  • Serve as dispersion chemistry expert for the purposes of safety, plant operation, raw material strategy, quality, regulatory, etc.
  • Accountable for the safety performance of the research labs as well as providing chemistry related safety input to manufacture.
  • Provide manufacturing support to safety, quality, efficiency, etc.
  • Ensure intellectual asset protection for the technology development.
  • Train and develop junior scientists/engineers, as well as provide product/chemistry training to manufacturing and commercial staff.
  • Monitor industry wide technology development from both a competitive and industry change perspective and make recommendations on how to defend/strengthen market position

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a relevant technical field, PhD preferred
  • Minimum 9 years’ experience in a similar role required
  • Knowledge of polymer chemistry (including both polymerization and structure property aspects of the science) is necessary. Broad expertise in dispersion chemistry, including knowledge of competitive chemistries as related to their strengths and weaknesses is a requirement.
  • Knowledge of the raw materials used to manufacture dispersions (from both a chemistry and economic perspective) is needed.
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry in general and as it specifically relates to polymer chemistry & spray drying processes is desired. 
  • Basic understanding of microbiology and biocides, as they relate to the preservation of aqueous dispersions, is helpful.
  • Knowledge of spray drying technology and processes is a plus. 
  • Understanding of regulatory matters that impact R&D, manufacturing and the end use markets served is also required.
  • Knowledge of the practice of intellectual property protection is necessary.
  • Knowledge of both lab and manufacturing safety standards and practices is necessary.
  • Ability to translate an idea into a viable commercial product is essential. This includes, but is not limited to experimental planning, economic evaluation, manufacturing considerations, safety and regulatory compliance, intellectual property considerations etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals, both on the technical side as well as the commercial side, is necessary. This includes both  individuals within the company, as well as customers.
  • Ability to write clear, concise procedures that can be easily followed is required. The ability to effectively supervise a small team is required.
  • Creativity with regards to recognizing opportunities provided by technology developments is essential.#LI-LG1
