WACKER SILICONES is one of the world’s biggest silicone manufacturers with silicone-based system solutions and over 3,000 different products. At our Ann Arbor/Adrian site, we are currently looking for a ​Chemist - Entry Level​ to join our team.



The primary duty of this role is the development of coatings which favorably position Wacker resins, as well as other similar products, for the purpose of creating value for our customers and Wacker Chemical Corporation for the Industrial Coatings Market Segment. The role will entail product development, technical service, interaction with process chemists, and communication management. It is preferred that the Chemist is capable of carrying out chemical synthesis of silicone and organic polymers. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Technical Service Role:
    • Conduct application testing where possible for new business potentials, make product recommendations, and potentially define customer or market needs

    • Prioritize and conduct work in laboratories according to business needs

    • Drive new product development projects, including projects being carried out in other parts of the Wacker organization

    • Address customer application and product quality (complaint) issues

    • Work with sales to develop deep relationships with select customers

    • Have the ability to work in a positive and collaborative manner

  • Chemist of Record (COR) Role:
    • Develop initial formula

    • Obtain raw material approvals

    • Lead Material Approval Form (MAF) Process

    • Develop product specifications

    • Work with the analytical departments to develop new test procedures where necessary

    • Responsible for the raw material costs of each recipe - qualifying alternative raw materials where appropriate, analyzing process order variances due to raw material costs differences

    • Maintain master data in SAP

    • Submit Management of Change (MOC) forms for specification and recipe changes

    • Responsible for intellectual property (composition and application) related to new products- patent searches and patent filings



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer and Coatings Technology or a related field is required
  • Minimum of two years of experience in general coatings applications, and/or background in silicone chemistry; background in polymer chemistry and emulsion and/or colloid science preferred


Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Research and development activities using the experimental design procedures, focusing on launching of new products, which include coatings formulations and resins
  • Advanced chemistry skills for practical work with Industrial Coatings or advanced application knowledge of silicone chemistry
  • Be willing to work hands-on in our laboratories as well as potential support in customer facilities
  • Technical support for Industrial Coatings - work with sales/marketing/TM focusing on customer needs
  • Root Cause Analysis, strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Understand the cost and economics for product development
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written - needs to write reports summarizing data and findings with well thought out conclusions
  • Be willing to travel 10% of the time, with an occasional increase of up to 25%
  • Good lab practice and safety skills and a working knowledge of Six Sigma, SPC, QC terminology and of analytical test methods
